EMV Transaction Fallback
Nowadays merchants are obliged to be able to
accept and process EMV cards. This standard was adopted to make payments more
secure, but still there might be some cases when a payment terminal cannot read
a chip card. For instance, the chip or the EMV card reader may be damaged.
When the transaction cannot be processed as an
ordinary EMV transaction a so called fallback transaction takes place. There
are two types of EMV transaction fallback, namely, swiped fallback and manual
fallback. If a payment terminal cannot read the chip the information can be
obtained from the magnetic stripe. And if swiped fallback fails, the card
number can be entered manually.
Now you know what you should do if your
payment terminal is not able to read the information from the chip on the card.
