3-D Secure and MPI Integrations
Why is it important to use payment processing
software which supports 3D Secure? Taking into account the constantly
increasing level of card fraud you need to protect your business from chargebacks
and as a result undesirable money losses. What is 3D Secure? 3D Secure is an
XML based protocol providing additional protection for cardholder’s data when
online transaction takes place.
At first it should be checked whether the card
is enrolled into 3D Secure program. It can be done through the merchant plug-in
(MPI). Then the cardholder must be identified: he/she enters the code
previously associated with the card. Later during the transaction it should be
entered once again otherwise the payment won’t be processed. According to the
security requirements the customer must be redirected to the issuing bank
website and enter the value there. Verification results (called PARES) will be sent
to software that made the MPI verification query (there are three fields: ECI,
CAVV and XID).
Payment processing software needs to support two
use cases. The first one is for the merchants who utilize payment pages; and the
second – for the merchants who send their queries directly through the API. In
the first case additional fields can be added to the payment page and
in the second case the redirection to the issuing website is required.
